Does anyone know if it is possible to reach the Khumbu icefall - after reaching Everest Base Camp - for tourist trekkers?

Yes, you can get to the foot of the icefall. It's a long walk from Gorak Shep.
If there are expeditions at base camp, you probably won't be welcomed because trekkers have been known to steal things from expedition camps. |

Really? we didn't have that experience at all with trekkers at base camp. I think our only fear was that of visiting trekkers carrying stomach bugs because that was always a big threat to us. Apart from that they were always welcome and sometimes eased the monotony of weeks of sitting around at base camp!. With regard to the icefall, you can get to it no problem but I'm not sure you can go very far without a climbing permit. Maybe it's not needed in October?
