    Default Camping at Base Camp

Is it possible to independently camp at base camp or would you have to ve part of an organised tour?

As far as I know there is no restriction on camping at EBC. You will have to have your own stove and food. If you go in summer the base camp will be very full as the designated expeditions will have already taken up their own sites. If you go in autumn there is likely to be very few expeditions at base camp so this problem should not be there.

It is perfectly fine to camp there. During the spring season April-May it is quite full and you should stay out of the way a bit, expeditions do not like campers all that much. At other times you will have the whole place to yourself.

You should have an ice ax with you, as it easily takes a n hour or two to hack a level platform for your tent, which should not be in a depression, as there is quite lot of water flowing around during the warm daylight hours. Still the floor will be bumpy... Maybe a handfull of 5" nails would also come in handy as stakes.

I have actually seen expeditions at EBC in November, twice.

First time, in -97 I think, there was an American 'proper expedition'. Second
time, in 2011, there was a Spanish TV-team, a reality show, that never meant
to go further than camp 3.

Not that it would have been difficult to find space for a tent or two nearby, but
the American group freaked out as soon as we came within shouting distance
and started shouting at us not to come any closer.

Between Gorakshep and EBC we passed a trail junction where one could have
turned off for Pumori BC. Right there was a hand drawn arrow and an invitation
to pop in for tea with the French expedition camped there at the time.

What about camping on the trail itself? Do you have to stick to the campsites in the grounds of lodges or dan you just pitch your tent anywhere as long as it isn't on the actually path and out of the way of the yak trains?

As it is a national Park you are not allowed to camp in other place rather than camping site. camp sites are not only provided by hotel owner, also some villagers have thier camp sites. Those are much quiter than one in tea house.
    Thanks

If you go far enough from the villages and main trails and out of sight you can camp.
