I did Manaslu Circuit in September 2011, tea houses all the way. Some are very basic, however a number of new ones are being built or upgraded.

How does the Manaslu Circuit compare in difficulty to the Annapurna Circuit?

I have hiked to Samagaon and back only, not crossed Larkya La, but I would say that both are about the same. Using the word "difficult" feels a bit strange, though. Both are village to village treks on well established local trails and there is one 5000m+ pass to cross, also frequently used for local traffic.

The biggest difference is the scant lodge network along the Manaslu trail, while AC has lodges or teashops every few hours even at the high pass.

I have a feeling that Larkya La pass is much more unreliable than Thorong La, though. Usually Thorong La is passable within a few days after a snow dump, while Larkya La can be closed for months at a time, like it was when we were attempting it in April 2009. When we got to Samagaon the pass had been shut by snow for about a month, and 2 weeks later, after we had gotten around via Arughat-bus-Bhulbhule and hiked to the other end of the trail nobody had still gotten over the pass. I think that the weather conditions at Larkya La are different from those at Thorong La, Larkya gets much more snow and it is not a question of not enough pressing traffic needs. So, if undeveloped services and "unreliable" high pass mean "difficult", then Manaslu circuit is more "difficult". Or should I say "in more natural state".

I agree with the above - I had no snow problems on the pass late March 2010but my guide said that was the least snow he had experienced in 5 crossings. The long down was very slippery and needed a lot of caution. Porters from a large group crossing the same day were injured. The pass does not have real steep up sections, just constant up that never seems to end !

We did the Manaslu circuit and Tsum valley in October 2011, on a full camping trip organised by Nepal Myths and Mountain Trails. A few notes to add to the first posting (whose trip notes we found very helpful).
    1) Manaslu circuit can now be done as a tea house trek, although the standard of lodges is variable.
    2) In autumn 2011 there were no lodges in Tsum valley, though you can arrange to stay in private houses or monasteries if you have a Nepali speaker with you and are prepared to eat local food. However, camping is advisable - it gives more certainty, flexibility and comfort.
    3) You can camp at Gumba Lamdang but they are not set up for overnight guests, and there is no food available. Ganesh base camp is too far to be done as a there and back day trip from Gumba Lungdang, although you can climb to a very good view point.
    4) Although the Shangrila map shows an apparent high level short cut from Dumje to Deng along the north side of the Shiar Khola, after extensive inquiries by our guide we concluded that this is not feasible with porters (and you have to camp).
I would agree that this is a fabulous trek, until you rejoin the Annapurna circuit back to Besisahar which is now absolutely horrible because of road works!

    Hi there

These notes have now been updated following our trek there in November 2012 - huge changes with lodges everywhere and more building, even in Tsum. Loved it again.

And just to remind people, the web address is http://fedup.com.au/information/nepal/nepal-information

    cheers
