Re: bus to Shivalaya? or walk from Jiri?

The Jiri-Shivalaya section is a nice introduction to the main trek and personally I would not take the bus. There are lodges at various places between Jiri and Shivalaya ( can't remember exactly but...

    Re: What is Happening ??

Well Escher, I must confess I have never heard Bolton-le-sands favourably compared to the lost Shangri-La ex Kingdom of Nepal, home to the worlds highest mountains, the snow leopard and numerous...

    Kakani

I was in KTM a couple of weeks ago and had a ride out on the Trisuli road to Kakani. The mountain views from there are stupendous ( agreed you cannot see Everest though ) and the whole area is pretty...
  4. Sticky: Re: The beautifull NATT-trails on the Annapurna Circuit

Andrees thanks for posting these trail notes. You have convinced me it's worth going back and doing the Annapurna Circuit trek again. I did it in about 1992 and I have been reluctant to go back again...
  5. Re: Tribhuvan Airport - article by Kunda Dixit

I had the "pleasure" of passing through TIA yestarday on way back to Delhi. The SARC conference is in full flow in KTM and the airport was horrendously busy with massive queues for all of those many...

    Re: current regulations

With just a week I would go straight from airport to Sunderijal and trek the Helambu circuit. Get your TIMS on the trail. NO transport hassles and lodges OK.

    Re: Dodgy road

The trekking company name on the side of the bus is Tiger Eye Adventures, based in Manali. The guide is called Rinku. My guess therefore is that the road is maybe the one that goes from Shimla to...
  8. Re: Tribhuvan Airport - article by Kunda Dixit

Well at least you don't have to ( separately ) pay the departure tax any more. That was the ultimate indignity! After being fleeced for permits, entrance fees, donations etc, you had to PAY AGAIN to...
  9. Re: Tribhuvan Airport - article by Kunda Dixit

Tribhavan Airport is on a general downward path, and will surely grasp the ultimate prize some time soon. The toilet quality is already world-class terrible and I always make sure I contribute...

Re: New Regulation Compulsory trekking Guides

What would be good would be a separate licence number for each guide with an internet link to a summary of their experience.

The licence system would have to be 100% corruption-proof.....

    I...

    Re: Topical Topic Guides

This disaster is terrible and I have been holding off making any postings until the rescue efforts have been completed. It's such a sad story and the weather conditions were truly exceptional. I'm...
  12. Re: August 2014: Nar-Phu and Annapurna Circuit trekking in monsoon

It's a great word, I will try and use it again!:)

I'm pondering a quick trip to KTM in a week or two so might sneak in a cheeky Helambu weekend. It may be so green that I am astounded.

    Bali...
  13. Re: August 2014: Nar-Phu and Annapurna Circuit trekking in monsoon

Great write up, thanks. I know winter trekking is the big thing recently, but it has the disadvantage that the scenery is very dull and brown looking. I was in KTM in June and it was astonishingly...

Re: Trek in Ladakh July 2014

    Hi Roger,

Trek was a camping trek for us. There are some small homestays on the first and last walking days but apart from that it is "wilderness" camping.
We needed a simple permit for Nubra...

Re: Tarmac Road Jiri to Lukla

I guess you can't stand in the way of progress, but I find this immensely sad. Once there is a road, nobody at all will walk in from Jiri, and for me that was the nicest section of the Everest/Goyko...

Re: January trek with 10 year old?

ABC in January?! I have only been in peak season and it was cold enough then. Part of the route in is exposed to avalanche danger, and you would need to check locally re lodge availability.

Re: January trek with 10 year old?

Lower Annapurna gets my vote. The lodges are good and frequent, so you can in effect stop where you like and be flexible. There are no AMS issues either. So the infrastructure is good for kids.

Re: Trek in Ladakh July 2014

Well in the end we did Nubra Valley to Leh via Lasermo La, a 7 day trek. Very different to Nepalese tea-house style trekking. Will be back again!

I have trekked Tsum with a porter/guide ( ie no licence ) and the only slight problem was at the big suspension bridge before the climb to Philim. For peace of mind however I would sort everything...
