Re: Makalu base camp in fewer days

I did do this trek in 2012, it was late November and many of the teahouses had shut. We had very basic camping equipment(and borrowed a bit more at Tashigoan plus food) as we were going elsewhere on...

Re: Travel Insurance and Implications for Nepal

    Hi

not sure I can answer when restrictions could be lifted but I see some lobbying in the Nepal press to have countries reconsider their warnings. Just as you say my usual travel insurance will...

    Re: Trek info

Before I comment along the same lines as above let me say, like all, I am shattered by the devastation in Nepal. I probably got hit with the bug pretty hard, 15 trips in 10 years. I commented to many...

    Re: Makalu Base Camp

I have only been going to Nepal sine 2003. 20 odd treks, not visits, some years I visited twice for extended times but now usually once a year for 5-6 weeks from mid November and one longish trek. I...

    Re: Makalu Base Camp

    Hi Manzey

I have been following your discussions with Roger a lot. I did this trek in 2012 with his help also and started about your new dates, actually Nov 17th I was 'trying' to climb to Seduwa...

    Re: Makalu Base Camp

    hi

assuming you get to Num by jeep in one day it would be late (I overnighted as the 2nd jeep driver wouldn't go till he was jeep was full !) so you may overnight there as its a long down and up...

    Re: Makalu Base Camp

I was there in late 2012 (too late I suffered from the lack of open teahouses). Yes there are teahouses BUT the operators 'go lower' from it seems mid to late November leaving virtually no one above...

    Re: Tumlingtar-Namche-3 passes-Lukla

Yes the Kirat lodge(new?) in Gothe Bazar was rebuilt by Dec 2012, upsteam on the top side of the swing Bridge. At that time they were cooking outside at front with some beds on the top floor, same...
  10. Re: Happy to provide info on Jiri - KP - EBC route.

Yes you bypass Lulka on the way up, yes 20 days is enough to walk in and do KP/EBC and back to Lulka. seems you have some spare days so even a day or two on top of this for flight delays due to...
  11. Re: Nepal-wide strike/bandh starts Monday 11 November

the flight bit seems BS - they were taking off from 6.30am this morning. No news on road transport after today. Few voting points i have passed were peaceful and crowded but that was only to from...
  12. Re: Nepal-wide strike/bandh starts Monday 11 November

Arrived on a flight with lots of spare seats today, unusual, so guessing the election issues coverage is having some effect. No problems from the airport, all of Thamel is operating but that will...
  13. Re: Just back from Everest Base Camp anybody need to ask anything ?

Thanks Redders, yes will be in Namche 27th, seeing someone finish the marathon on 28th before heading up.
  14. Re: Just back from Everest Base Camp anybody need to ask anything ?

    Hi

I will try to head to Jiri 20th depending on bus services. I had an email from Namche yesterday, my friend said great weather. Just wondering on remaining snow cover, especially on the passes...
  15. Re: Nepal-wide strike/bandh starts Monday 11 November

Just to add that the government has also announced 17/18/19/20 as public holidays so most if not all offices will be closed.

    Re: Avoiding Strikes, Crowds etc

I arrive 18th (in case you thought your timing was poor !) I have been aware of the election date for many months but decided to just stay with that date. I made it in from a trek and out to the...

    Re: Favourite trekking days

    Hard, loved Thorung La too, love around Jumbesi and the shortish walk down to Phaplu from Ringmu. maybe these;

    1. Gokyo over Renjo la to Thame - peaceful
    2. Lho to Samagoan - Views, (and Bimtang...

Re: visa upon arriving in KTM

USD100 is for 90 days, USD40 for 30 days - the 60 day option is not available now, unless you take the 30 days and extend.

I have been much luckier than the 1 hour wait most times.

Re: Question: Purifying water in a camelback

By your question i assume you will not take a bottle at all. I use a Camelbak but still take a bottle, often two. Fill and purify water in the bottles when i arrive for overnight, that gives me...

Re: December Gokyo Trek - too cold? dangerous?

RE YakTrax - they are really worth it, very light and great on exposed ice, not snow. I used them on Cho La where the ice was exposed and don't go without them now.

Re: Trekking Everest base camp Nov 2012

If you use an agency for the staff hire then you pay upfront and usually they will get the guide to find/or have porters they use regularly at Lulka.

Are you doing this or planning to hire a guide...
