I stayed in Excelsior last January. It is central in Thamel but I wouldnt say that it was particularly clean or good quality. Quality depends on how much money you have to spend. If you have enough stay in Kantipur Temple House which is really good - but relatively expensive!

Hi
I always stay at the Kathmandu Guesthouse. Quiet, good service, great atmosphere, nice garden. Website: www.nepalhotel.com/

I stayed here and found the staff wonderful. The location is very quiet and a good walk into Thamel to view the sights. I would go back for sure.

Ten or 15 years ago the Ktm Guesthouse was the place to stay, but full of pretentious westerners now, although they do have a good breakfast. Try the Norbu Linka, also in Thamel. The garden rooms on the 5th floor are great-getting up there keeps you in shape for trekking, too!
