Hi - can anyone tell what I would roughly pay for hired gear such as gor-tex jacket and sleeping bag in Katmandu. Also what is the quality of hired gear like in general?

There are plenty shops who rent gear. You should get a good sleepingbag for about 1US$ a day. The quality depends on how much time you spend looking for a really good one.
I dont know about renting goretex jackes, it depend for what you need it. It may be, that you could rent a expedition jacket, but most people just buy a jacket. please be aware, that most of the "brand" clothes a just fakes.
I normaly just carry a very light rainjacket with me (goretex is pretty heavy) for breaking the wind. In october I have always an umbrella with me, as it is far more comfortable to walk with it and the jacket is merily to to give some extra protection. Its the way nepali people do.
If you go trekking in November/december renting a cosy downjacket for 1 US$/day could be an excellent idea.
