SIA suspends services to Kathmandu

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines Ltd said on Wednesday it would suspend flights to Kathmandu in violence-racked Nepal from the end of the month.

SIA said in a statement the decision to suspend its service to the Himalayan kingdom -- which runs three times a week -- was part of its network and capacity review, and was due to an uncertain operating environment.

Indeed, it is another sad event for Nepal and the tourism indursty there. Singpore specified however, that the decision was made purely on comercial grounds (not enough bums on seats, basically) and not because of any safety issue. The expression "violence-raked" is the spin put by Reuters themselves. I thought I would like to point this out as a specific example of how the media adds whatever spin they want to a particular event.
I guess the perception of the local situation, and communication in the media around the world, helps feed this downward spiral in the number or tourists going to Nepal. Of course if I were SIA, and only half of my seats full for months on end, I would probly to the same.
I hope this whole issue gets sorted out one way or another, or hopefully, if the status quo continues, people would get used to the idea that they can still spend quite an enjoyable and safe holiday in Nepal, even in the present conditions.
Anyway, I usually use Thai Airways. Will see you on trek somewhere sometime in October.
In the meantime "Ke garne!"
