Yes, a great soul has left us. Exceptional in so many ways, and still so "common" (in the best of meanings) and so close to absolutely self efacing and "normal" for a personality...

Not without enemies and peple he could not get allong with... There were people he could not stand, and I am sure, people who could not stand him. Not a perfect hero.
But that, I suppose, made him even more mainstream.

I guess this is the Hillary paradox: a trully exceptional person (for both his adventure and humanitarian exploits) packaged as a guy-next-door. And with an attitude to match.

Just bought High Adventure at Pilgirms in Thamel last week and will read it again, for the second time. The first time was 30 years ago, which started my interest for Nepal and the Himalayas.
