Dave,
If this is your first time to Nepal this year, you need a passport photo, $30 for a single entry visa and that is all. The line is long though. If you can get the visa in the coutry that you are in through the Nepal Embassy, then it would save you some headache and it would be faster when you get here, other wise it could take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour.

You neglected to say what nationality you are. If American, no visa is needed. I arrived at KTM airport last year and was processed and out the door in 15 minutes while people who had visas had a much longer time.

HiEverybody
I am a local adventure travel/tour operator based in Kathmandu and a regular visitor of this forum and what I have noticed for past couple of weeks in forum like this and others that some people are maliculously posting negative posts re Nepal.I assure you Nepal is still the safest country for tourist as well as locals and people of Nepal most freindliest people, agents most honest $ sincere than others in this world but I do agree on one point beaurocrates are same all over the world and it is no different here either. It might take few hours/dollars to get instant visa at the airport but it is worth than the trouble in your country.Even the Americans need visa
Michael must have sneaked thru his girlfreinds underwears without a visa.

I do agree that either way would work, and yes Americans do need visas. A lot of the wait depends on what day and what flight you come in on. Some days there are flights from Singapore, Thailand, India and other places that all arrive within 2 hours of each other, which could cause a long line for visas. I have always picked up my visa at the airport, but I had some friends who came in just last week that took them about an hour to get their visa, because of the many flights that arrived close to theirs. Immigration personnel are very pleasant and I have not had any problem with them at the airport or at the department of immigration.
