i am also going to nepal, arriving kathmandu 3/10. i am slightly worried, but my trekking company and others tell me there is nothing to be concerned about. coming from new york, i will probably be far safer on trek than at home, and am looking forward to seeing nepal without many tourists around. good luck!

I have arrived from Nepal 5 weeks ago, after spending 3 weeks there and traveling all over the place using most modes of transport. At no stage did I or any of the group acompanying me (group of 7 including 2 children) felt in any way threatened. Kathmandu, the major tourist routes, and the majour trekking areas are safe, and no tourists has been killed or threatened in the 6-7 years of Maoist insurgency in Nepal.
Go and enjoy the place. It is worth it.

i just left KTM for india two days ago.
my flight was the very first one cancelled after the maoists attacked lukla, and a group of us, faced with the possibility of a cancelled trip or week long delays, got our airline to fly us to Phaphlu (two and half days walk from lukla).

i travelled with a couple of others until we reached the main lukla-namche track, but basically because i didnt have a map that went below lukla.
i travelled most of the way by myself up to and back from Kala Pattar and flew out of lukla on the 17th.

to be honest i never felt in any danger (even when by myself) and the only problem was trying to find out when lukla was going to re-open, while in namche and pheriche. understandably no one could give a definative answer.

there really didnt appear to be any safety issues, just the odd hastle and annoyance that comes about from the increased army-maoist tensions.

any questions, dont hesitate to send an email.....
