Hi Andy,
In November last year "Trekking Routes Around Kanchenjunga" maps, ed 2001, scale 1:100000 were on shelves in map shops in Kathmandu. About 300 rupees. Check out this site
maphouse@wlink.com.np
The requirement of obtaining a trekking permit was a party of two at least. You may need to involve a trekking agency in Kathmandu to arrange a guide/ porter/s. Number of porters will depend on your group. Flight from Kath to Taplejung cost about $US 150 (not sure how much for Nepalese?). Takes about 10 to 12 hours to travel to trail head/s by bus.
Hopefully I will be doing this trek in Oc / Nov this year. A big problem to look for trekking partner for this route. Have been saving for this. And certaintly next year if not....
Cheers
Dzung

Namaste dear felllow trekkers,
I am a "young" (28 y.o) swiss doctor, who loves to trek in remote areas (upper Mustang in 2001, Cordillera Blanca - Peru in 2002, Accross Zanskar and Stok Kangri-Laddhak in 2004) to enjoy the true silence of the mountains and avoid the anty "defilee" of trekkers...
I am now in Kathmandu and organising a trek in the Kachenjunga area to reach the North Base Camp and eventually the South Base camp if the pass inbetween is open. (if you want to get more info, look at www.myhimalayas.com/kangchenjunga_olungchungkola/index.htm)
It would last little more than 3 weeks and wish to start around the 24th of february from Kathmandu.
I have a tent (for 3 persons), a stove, kitchen kit, so you only need to have a sleeping bag and mat (that you can rent in Thamel by the way).
My way is alpine style: light and inexpensive (at best : just us; at most a guide and 1-2 porter: because we have to get the special permit - 10$/week to be allowed to enter there).
So I am looking for other motivated trekkers to attempt this.
Let me know about your desire of doing different in the Himalayas, e-mail-me : spacemiky@hotmail.com.

Woah! This is an old thread. Happy Adventure Treks was the agency who arranged my trek to Kanchenjunga back in 2004. They are no longer operating as they were, but I'm still in contact with Sonam (who did the KTM arrangements) and Krishna (my guide). If anyone is planning a trek to that area then they will be happy to assist - ask me and I'll share their email addresses.
OffBeaten: be aware that trekking in Kanchenjunga still requires a "proper" trekking permit from the Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation. I doubt these are issued direct to tourists so will require some assistance from Kathmandu agents. They are notionally for a minimum of two people but that can be worked around. Unless you speak good Nepali you'll be needing a guide, and I'd heartily recommend taking a porter (or two) as its quite a strenuous trek. I'd expect that the (three passes) trail from Ghunsa to Tserem will be open in March, and as long as the weather is OK. We have a couple of other threads on this forum with info that may be of use to you, see here (http://www.trekinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2196) & here (http://www.trekinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23146) etc...
It's a great trek, have fun and please let us know what you make of it. :)

PM sent with email addresses.
Actually I expect that Sonam & Krishna wouldn't mind their email addresses being posted in this forum. But I happen to know the forums are trawled by spambots, I don't post my email address let alone those of friends.
