I have a United States prescription for mefloquine, but it is really expensive here. I was wondering of the availability of this in Kathmandu, and whether I would need a prescription or if my U.S. prescription would work. My health insurance is willing to pay for costs associated with curing malaria, but not in preventing it.
thanks,

Thanks for the information, it helps my pre-travel anxiety. I just want to get on that plane!
I agree about the drug companies. The latest and greatest malaria prophalayis?, Malarone, is something like $10 a pill and you have to take it everyday, but it is just a combination of two older drugs that have been around. Maybe I should make me own... I think the drug companies get some patent where only they are allowed to make it for some amount of time (1 year?, 5 years?), then the price drops to nothing when it can become generic. It is also really confusing for the doctors here, because different health insurance plans will only insure certain meds. $$$.
