Hi All,

My wife and I canceled our trip Decemebr Trip (Sorry Nick), but we are regreting it, since we have these Yak shaving kits and we just learned there are no Yaks in Thailand

It looks like we might be able to make to Nepal for a few weeks in late January.

Where is the best place to get in a short trek that time of year. We will only have a 14 - 20 day but everyone is telling us to just skip KMD right now so we hope that is enough time.

- Eric

Namaste,
well Kathmandu is beautiful and it definitively worth stayin there some days and maybe an other day in Bakhtapur. If you dont like very touristy places, stay in Freakstreet area (Jochen tole),there are again many acceptable lodges and your meet more nepalese people than tourists in the street.
for Trekking you could go to Helambu or Langtang. a beautiful trek would be in the Annapuranarea to Gorepani, Tadapani and Gandrung. If you are lucky, you could go to the Annapurna sanctuary, but it may be already closed.
you could also fly to jomson, visit the villages around muktinath and Kagbeni and go down to Pokhara. This will be about 8-13 days.
Whereever you go, rent a warm and cosy downjacket, even when its sometimes warm in the midday sun, its really gets cold in the afternoon and night. You might have a look to some of my pictures for annapurnaregion in www.nepal-dia.de, the writing is in german burt navigation for the pics is not that difficult.
Coming from thailand you will love al the handknitted sweaters and gloves in Kathmandu. Nepal is so wonderful that you probably will like to stay the lon´gest possible!
Good luck Andrées and have some extra daownjackets for the poor shaved yaks!

Any of the treks suggested by Andrees are excellent.
I would not advise you to skip KTD... If you are in Nepal for the first time it is definitely worth it spending a couple of days seeing the likes of Baktapur, KTD Durbar Square, Swayambunath, Boudanath and Patan. You can do all this in one day if you start early enough, but it might be a bit tiring. And Baktapur is realy worth visiting at leasure.
I would say spend two days in and around KTD, and then do one of the treks proposed by Andrees. If you go in the Annapurnas (say to Jomsom, or the Ghandruk/Ghorepani/AC areas), you can save time by flying to Pokhara. Although the bus ride along the Trisuli river is worth it. Take a tourist bus though, unles you really want to imerse yourselves in the local culture, to a deeper extent than usual...

Don't miss Kathmandu. You'll want to see the many world heritage sites and enjoy the food in Thamel after your trek. I have been there 3 times in the past year and felt safe in the touristy areas. You can walk to Dhurbar Square and the monkey temple. Take a cab to Bodnath. The shopping is fun and there are some good restuarants. The Third eye, The Blue Note, Fire and Ice to name a few. Everyone has favourites they'll recommend you eat at.

Jagat, alpintourguide etc,

You have been around this webpage for a while now... There is another page for advertisments and recommendations. Please use that. While trekkers do occasionally recommend a guide, a trekking agency, a hotel or a restaurant sometimes, this page is not for direct advertising.

I have not exercised the right Mr Webmaster has graciously given me, of changing posts to a different forum. So I kindly ask you to do that.

Cheers

Jagat,
yes, I fully agree with the need for exposure. And this is a very good site where people from all over the world come for information or to share experiences... However what makes this particular page extremely good, and what encourages people to come here, instead of just going away, is the fact that there is little direct advertising. The advertising is being kept separate.
So while you may get some exposure by "spamming" every now and then, you may lose in the long run as the patience of the webmaster finishes and she/he may ban you, or the potential tourists drop off if there is too much advertising on this discussion forum.

There is a more subtle way which I am sure you are aware off, and it is related to you having your link to the advertising forum, which you probably already have.

You may genuinely answere some of the questions, you may truthfully getting involved in some of the discussion, perhaps clarifying some detail. It need not be very often and need not be a very long message. Similar to what you have sometimes done in the past. If you do have your advertisment in the appropriate place on the other page, tourists will remember you because they have already seen some of your comments... Advertizing works like that, by associating memories from various fields. This way you keep everyone happy.

Sorry, I am not here to teach you how to run a business... You have a good web page and you seem to know what you are doing. Just trying to make sure we don't lose friends...
