Well, appart from my trip to Nepal at the end of the year, I will also be there in July. Not sure what trek I will do... Just going to decide once in Kathmandu. On a whim. Wherever the spirit takes me. Whatever I feel like at the time. I feel so decadent...

Going with my son, and a friend and his son.

Hello,
How old are your sons? I'm wondering if 11 is too young to do the Everest Base Camp trek? Just gathering info at this point since this would be my first time in Nepal. Thanks

Sons are 18 and 20.
I have trekked with my son when he was 9, 10, then at 12 and again at 16.

The enjoyment on a couple of things...
a) the level of maturity of the child and the relationship you have with the child, communication etc. I know this is kinda going deep and meaningful. But it is a relatively long trek (14-15 days) to EBC, and a child can get bored... The level of appreciation of the awesome scenery and the culture is not the same.

b) the need to take an extra couple of days of acclimatization - children are a bit more sensitive to altitude than adults. Maybe an extra one at Jorsale... Then the usual two days at Namche, maybe a night at Tengpoche, and then an extra day somewhere past Tengpoch, above 4000m... Assuming you'll do EBC.

My own experience was good overal, though I had to abandon one of the treks due to my then 9 year old son being affected by altitude. I did not follow b) above... You live and learn...

I think the trek would be a good experience, for both parent and child, provided the two points above are taken into account.

I would do perhaps Gokyo as a first trek, in the Everest area. It is about 2-3 days shorter, and just as awesome as the EBC, if not a bit more, in fact.

One thing is sure. A father - child trek can be an excellent "bonding" experience.
