The Siberian Express across Russia to Moscow has been described as the best train ride in the world. Maybe not anymore. The Tibetan Railway from Qinghai to Lhasa has thrown its hat in the ring. It will eventually be extended to the Nepalese border, only an hour's drive from Kathmandu.
Some things you might want to think about before boarding:
Price: Tibetan Railway tickets are CHEAP, ranging from US$ 49 to $180 depending on how much comfort you require and where you're coming from. Read More..http://travelbackpacker.blogspot.com

the Tibetan border is a lot more than one hours drive from Kathmandu.

It takes more than an hour just to cross the border, with two inefficient immigration controls to pass through. The railway looks fantastic, I travelled by road from Golmud to Lhasa in 2004 and many long sections of the railway are close by the road. However, I would rather see the chinese out of Tibet and feel that the railway will be used to ship in thousands of chinese to swamp the Tibetan culture for ever.

Indeed.
One of my friends is planning on a long train journey for his holiday next year - Cardiff to Lhasa, via Moscow, Ulan Bator & Beijing, by rail all the way. Should be quite a trip!

Wow! - That sounds like quite a trip. I hope your friend is thoroughly prepared for the most difficult, unreliable and expensive section of the trip - Cardiff to Calais. He/She should be prepared for delays, cancellations and all manner of problems. Once out of the UK it should, of course, be relatively straightforward. The Chinese section should be pretty good from what we saw of the Chinese railways. The track maintenance is excellent, the trains look good and are obviously well maintained and if the interiors are as good as the exteriors it should be an excellent experience.

This is not good news for those planning to go to tibet if this is being enforced.
