Gokyo in Jan .. Shoes and the cold

I am thinking of heading to Gokyo Lakes in Jan .... which I know will be very cold from what I have read. Not having any snow experience (coming from West Aust) what is the footwear that people recommend. Are full leather boots required or is Gortex good enough. Do you require snow gaitors and are the possibilies high that the snow will stop me completing the trip.

Any advice would be most welcomed as the cold weather is not my specialty. Thanks
