Hi Mel,
I'll be arriving in Nepal during the first week of May, and am planning to spend the first few weeks playing the the Khumbu area. Don't have a set itinerary, but I was thinking of doing the AC afterwards if I'm feeling up to it. When in May were you thinking of starting the trek?

I'm 29 and also from Toronto (King and Bathurst).

Hey Steve!
I'm Sherbourne and Bloor area!!
I was thinking of leaving from here the 1st or 2nd of may so i guess i will arrive around the 4th. I don't have any itinerary planned... I'm really flexible with dates if i can find people to go with. I have been chatting with someone from the States who will be arriving in nepal around the 8th and is also interested in the AC.
Let me know what you think

You're just around the corner!

Unfortunatley, it sounds as though you guys will be leaving before I get back from the Khumbu Region. I was planning to get back to Kathmandu during the last week of May, and leave for the AC at the end of May or beginning of June.

I have a flight booked for arrival in Nepal on May 7th, but if I arrive in Delhi earlier then expected, I am going to try to fly on an earlier flight. If you are waiting around for your partners in KTM, I will be there for a few days(maybe until the 9th) seeing the sights before I begin my trek.

Just curious, but what did you end up doing for flights? Costs? I just want to see what people are paying from this area.

Have you already done EBC and around? I want to do the AC aswell, but I've been infatuated with Everest since I was younger, and I just have to step on it!

Hey Steve!
I have never done any treks in my like, this will be the first! I still haven't even decided what trek i want to do..i should probably make a decision!! You doing the Khumbu alone?
I still haven't booked my flight yet, I have been searching though and the best price i've found is from Orbitz and it is about 1600$. Who did you book your ticket with?
I should be getting there around the 4th or 5th so definitely if you are around we should connect!!!

sorry...just realized that the orbitz price i said was in US$..the best canadian price i've found (with all taxes) is 1764$ from expedia.ca..and that is from pearson....everything is cheaper if you fly out of buffalo...but you need someone who would be willing to drop you off if you don't feel like taking the bus or leaving your car there!!

Mel,
Yes, I will be doing the Khumbu alone. I'm sure there will be plenty of people on the trail if I get a little lonely or bored and I've done quite a few solo hikes (never above 4000 meters, so it will be a new experience for me) over the years and haven't had any problems.
I'm not planning on getting any porters or guides as I consider my gear list to be substantially light (about 15 lbs) and as I get higher, I'll be wearing more of the clothing.
I booked a flight to Delhi for about $1300 cdn and then booked with Jet Airways to get to KTM ($360 round trip). I was going to wait until I arrive in Delhi to book my flight to KTM, but I got a little paranoid after chatting with some of the fellows here on the forum. I didn't want to be stuck for days waiting for an available flight. I would think $1764 is a pretty good price. When I was originaly looking for prices, they were upwards of $2000. Some were very expensive!
One thing about flights, is that if you overnight in Delhi, make sure you get a travel visa so you can leave the airport. Apparently, the airport is not too luxurious. I've never been, so I'm just passing along info.
Keep me posted on your plans, and we'll see if we can cross paths. Always nice to meet up with people from our hometowns.

Steve-

Just to confirm about Delhi airport: It is not a nice airport. I have heard that they have dorm rooms there but I am glad that I got away from the airport for the night and went to a proper hotel.

Hey Steve!
I actually was only able to book my flight today so i had to pay more than what i had originally anticipated about 1800...but i also decided to shell out the extra 30$ and go through london rather than dehli. this way i don't need a visa and i get to experience a much more interesting layover :)

Steve-

That is exactly what I did, flew into Delhi in the evening, stayed at a hotel in the city for the night, and flew to KTM in the morning on Jet Airways. There is a really nice hotel right outside the airport but I think they charge about 200$US/night. I found my hotel on hotels.com and was very happy with it (25$US for the night and breakfast). Beware of the taxi scams when leaving the airport and make sure that the taxi driver knows that you are travelling out of the international airport on your way out. I got left at the domestic airport and had a hell of a time trying to get a cab back to the international.

Mel-

Glad you found a ticket, but I lived in London for a while and I have to say that London is no where near as interesting as Delhi.

Have a great trip you all.

best,

critter

Mel,
As of now, I am scheduled to arrive KTM on May 7th in the afternoon. When does your flight arrive?
I'll be off to EBC a few days afterwards depending on flights and conditions.

After you finalize some of your plans, make sure to keep me posted and we'll see if our schedules can coincide.

Hey Mel,
I have no plans on where to stay. It's been my experience (in Asia anyway) that most cabbies end up taking you to the Hotel of their choice (whichever pays them commision?), so I will tell them to take me to some place out of my Nepal book, and he will take me where he wants, and if it's nice, I will stay there. I'm arriving during the day, so I'm not too concerned. If I don't like the place and it's gets nasty, I'll just start hiking somewhere else.
Of course, if you have any recommendations, I would be glad to have them. It seems the budget area is Thamel (please correct me if I am wrong) so I will just choose one in the middle somewhere to get my bearings straight.
Do you have a place to stay already?...or some ideas? Maybe someone has some input on a place to stay ($10 or so).
I have never been to Nepal, and I don't personally know anybody who has been, so I'm just gonna kind of "go with the flow". The info on this site has led me to believe that it is a rather travel friendly place and for some reason, I think everything will work out. But, if you are already in town when I arrive, let me know where and I'll see you off before you begin the AC!

It sounds like I'll be arriving a little late to the party, but I am planning on getting to Nepal around the 31st of May until probably 24 June, and I am hoping to do either EBC or the Annapurna trek. Is there anyone who will be in the area then and be interested in a trek? Thanks

Dear All,
It is indeed a very good idea to travel to Nepal. The weather is also mindblowing with rainfall and bit of humidity. You will find plenty of people walking the trails of the AC as this is the peak season for trekking in Nepal.Though,if you guys have plan to travel to Nepal via Delhi, then, beinformed,Delhi is a very good place to travel but the people you find there seems to be more interested in making more money by doing fraud.I had visited Delhi some weeks back and the hospitality the Indians show is very weird.I had booked a room for $8/Day,but when i checked out i was charged $15.When i raised a question they told me that they had added 15% Govt tax,15% Service Charge,50% more on phone calls and etc.It was a very bad experience for me,since it was a low budget trip.So before you make your trip to Nepal via India ,think Twice.

Well Wisher,
