hello,

i have always wanted to do some trekking in nepal. the problem is that the only time i can get off from work is in january. is it possible to do the everest base camp or annapurna circuit trek in january? i am prepared for the cold weather and i am also willing to carry a tent in case the lodging houses are closed.

thanks in advance

Hello,
Jnauary can be a perfect trekking time an you often have clear skys. Normally there will be some snowstorm in the second part of december. This could mean, that the thorong la on the annapurna round trek cant be srossed for the next 2 months. But the weather is not very regular, there are winters with a lot of snow and others with no rainfall at all.
In the Annapurnaregion the jomsom trek would always be perfect, as you dont have to cross high passes. I´ve been on annapurna sanctuary on the day of new year, another year we returned with the last lodge owner around 20 Dezember as everything was closed because of the snow.If your trekking in January, buy some codeine tabletts in Kathmandu. You can get them without prescription. Everyone gets very bad colds up there an codeine is the only drug thatr seems to help. And rent a cosy down jacket, you will love it, because the lodges normaly aren´t heated.
Good luck Andrées
