Kareen,
If you are going to the Annapurnaregione you dont really need the help of a trekking agency. There are plenty of good lodges al along the way and food is very tasty.
You can also meet plenty of other trekkers in Kathmandu, so that you just can form a little group by yourself.
I guess that most of the people (>80%) are trekking just on their own. Having a porter can be very nice.
When you trek by yourself, it will cost You about14-20$a day.
a porter would be another 10 $ +tip.
Please dont misunderstand me, its perfectly fine to go with a trekking agency and they do normaly a great job, but just be sure they dont sell you an expensive camping trek or consider just to go on you own. I just write this, because I have met quite a few people treking with a agency who where astonished how easy it would have been to go on their own.
i wish you good luck an a wonderfull trekking time
