Nameste, well the Maoist problem is for real. I have been incountry for 3 months and in that time the Maoists have set off a socket bomb in a tourist restaurant in Thamel (the tourist area), set off other bombs thruout the city at various times. I did the Circuit and EBC and Kala Patar. Altho I had no problems on the trails( I trekked alone with no guide or porter) I talked with other trekkers who did have problems with the Maoists both on the Circuit and EBC trail. So how good is your karma? There have been lots of battles between soldiers and Maoists. I would hate to be caught in the middle of such a scene. The soldiers shoot everyone and call the dead Maoists altho a small percentage are. You will most likely have no problem whatsoever but there is no gaurantee. There are not as many trekkers as in past years so the trails and teahouses are looking for you. Maoists or not the mountains are still extremely gorgeous. I would say you have a better chance of meeting violence in your own country than here.
