I read this travelogue not too long ago and thought you should take a look at it...regarding your shorts and it has a list of what to bring. Her travelouge is really interesting... Kim

Dont worry,
In the towns and on the trek you can wear shorts. Anyway on the most treks it will be pretty warm. Maybe You should not take the shortest Minishorts, but normal ones ar perfecly OK.

It is probably OK on the very popular "coca-cola" treks like the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna. Nepalis in these areas are more used by now with westerners and their "disrespectful" ways. I would not advise you go into any gompa or temple wearing shorts. This is also definitely not advisable should you travel away from the "coca-cola" tracks to more remote areas. In general I would agree with the advice given in the Lonely Planet guide about this subject, wich advises against it. You will not get whipped in public like in the muslim countries, but Nepalis do find wearing shorts especially by women as offensive.
