I will be in Nepal October 21 for 5 weeks. I will go even though I'm not really happy with what's happening at the moment. I know it's too early to really know what impacts there will be on so-called independent trekkers, but I have a couple of questions/comments. I'm not interested in having someone guide me or carry my gear; not for macho or moral reasons, I just want to do my own thing. Given that, if TRC/TAAN requires that I hire someone, do I hire a "guide" to stroll along with me while I do what I want? I expect this will double my per day cost, but that's not really too bad. I'm hoping the agency won't try to stick it to me and charge $40-50 per day just because they can. I may or may not listen to suggestions. In fact, I'm just perverse enough to deliberately stay in a lodge not recommeded by a "guide."
Also, if two or more people get together with a single guide and sometime during the trek decide to go their own ways, what happens with the guide? Indeed, if a group is spread out along the trail, how do the checkpoints verify if your guide is really behind you somewhere?
I'm sure there are other aspects that haven't been considered yet, and I guess I'll be something of a guinea pig.
