Hi,
Could somebody explain what the guide can give vs porter except better English and some Nepal history background? If english is not so important why should somebody hire a guide and not just a porter? Is it true that most porters know the passes very well?
I really don’t want to scorn the guide job, just want to understand what is the difference.
thanks

Guides are trained to look after your needs. Not only do they speak better English (and/or other popular languages) but they are expected to be knowledgable about the local culture, geopraphy, flora & fauna. They will also have first aid skill and should have a good grasp of how to recognise and cope with AMS, and have the contacts to summon assistance or rescue should things go really wrong. I believe the apprenticeship, training and certification process is quite thorough.

Sometimes porters are guides in training. It's quite possible that porter A will be at least as competent as guide B, the main difference being in the certified qualification.

Occasionally you may meet a 'porter/guide' who will have the skills to act as your guide, AND he'll also carry your bag (though maybe not so heavy).
