Body found in Nagarjun jungle

Four months after German tourist Sabine Ursula Gruneklee, 31, went missing in the 16 sq km Nagarjun forest, tightly guarded by the Royal Nepalese Army, police believe they have found her dead body.
Grasscutters Saturday spotted a decayed and shrunken human body entangled among the branches of a tree on a cliff in the forest and informed police. Though the body has decayed beyond recognition, investigation officers are almost sure that it is of Gruneklee, who signed in while entering the forest on October 15, but never signed out.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Pitambar Adhikari, investigating the disappearances of Gruneklee and French tourist Celine Henry, 32, who also went missing in the same forest on September 3, said, "The body we recovered has long, grey hair. We believe it is Sabine's body." Celine, on the other hand, had short, darker hair.

Several searches were conducted in the past months in the forest, including those involving French and German teams who had brought along sniffer dogs. DSP Adhikari could not be certain whether the teams searched the area where the dead body was recovered Saturday. "It's a big forest. We might have overlooked this area," he said.

Encouraged by the recovery of the body, a police team has initiated a massive search in the area, hoping to find Celine's remains as well.

The body was taken for forensic tests to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Saturday evening. Doctors are expected to perform post-mortem tests on the body Monday. Nepal Police has informed the German Embassy in Kathmandu and the German police about the recovery of the body.

Meanwhile, identification of the body will require a DNA test.

The disappearances came to light after Celine's family members reported to the French Embassy in Nepal in October that she had been out of contact since September 3. Celine had left Hotel Pilgrim in Thamel that morning for Nagarjun forest, leaving her belongings at the hotel. She never came back.

On October 16, a search team from the French Embassy led by French Ambassador Michel Jolivet found some women's garments in the area. Later, police found blood stains on trodden grass in the forest. Tests revealed that the blood stains actually matched that of Sabine whose disappearance was reported only on October 19. Sabine was to receive her boyfriend Peter Doolan at Tribhuvan International Airport on October 18. She never reached there.

Sabine had stayed in Thamel's Hotel New Horizon from October 7 to October 14. She moved to Hotel Blue Horizon, also in Thamel, on October 14 and left for Nagarjun forest on October 15, leaving her belongings at the hotel. She was carrying a Jack Wolfskin backpack, EC debit card, some cash, her IDs, a diary and a Canon Ixus camera. Police never recovered the valuables. However, her driving license and Celine's passport were recovered from the forest during police searches.
