Just thought I'd post an on-the-ground report from Ktm - well, there's not much to report - in Thamel it's very much business as normal - a week long strike started yesterday but many of the shops and most of the bars and restaurants are open as normal - and the people are still happy and smiling. Been into the old town yesterday and earlier today and walked along New Road, focus of many of the recent demonstrations, but all is quiet there too - a few more police than is usual but no tense atmosphere or sense of current or impending trouble. Very few tourists though, many less than even last February, so have actually managed to get a seat next to the fire in Sams Bar two nights in a row :)

In summary, its definitely business as usual here, no signs of trouble, even along New Road, taxis are running a normal service, the sun is shining, the momos still taste good and the internet still works. All in all 'no problem'.

Hope this on-the-ground report is useful for anyone considering whether or not to come.

Thank you for taking the time to send this. I'm sure all like me who will be there in the next month or so are extremely appreciative. Please if you get the opportunity, post again. There was one press report I rread today saying internet (plus phones) may get cut in the lead up to the elections. A minister was being quoted.

enjoy Nepal.

Thanks for your kind words - I'm off to Lukla tomorrow but I'll try to post an update when I return to Ktm early in March...

Just been amusing myself reading the latest press reports on Nepal - stories of soldiers 'hunkered down behind bunkers in Ktm' and all that sort of thing - the police presence is a little heavier around New Road, Durbar Sq and the Royal Palace, but otherwise no more so than normal - and even in these places they are drifting around chatting and laughing as usual.

It wouldn't surprise me if they do cut comms tomorrow but I dont think it'll be a long term thing as it was last year. Pre pay mobiles are still not working, but others are fine.

Thanks Plyn, that is good to know.
I'm going anyway regardless of any problems. I have been assured by a local that all will be fine.
