Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning to go to Nepal in October this year for about 3 or 4 weeks. However, at the moment we are having a debate about whether to book everything in advance through one of the many companies offering organised treks or to simply fly to Kathmandu and arrange something when we get there.

The other thing we are trying to decide on is which trek to do. We would like to do the Annapurna Sanctuary but we are just a bit concerned that we are going to be bumping into loads of other trekkers all the time.

It's our first time to Nepal so any advice on whether or not to book in advance and where to go would be very much appreciated.

No! Don't book anything from home. Try the link for recommended guides on this site and email a couple of them. You can correspond and then meet in person in Kathmandu. Better to pay a guide directly and more money will make its way into the economy where it is needed. http://www.geocities.com/porterguides/

There will be lots of people on the trail but there are plenty of moments when you are on your own. The trails are busy with trekkers, children going to school, down to Kathmandu to get supplies etc. Nepal is not a wilderness experience, but more of a people experience. I am on my way back for the 5th time this Fall.
