My friend and I recently visited Nepal on a volunteer project. After the project ended we went trekking in the Annapurna area with an independent guide. I can't say enough good things about him. He provided us with an amazing opportunity to trek through Nepal as we as exchange cultural views and ideologies. If you are looking for more than just a trekking guide, Jagat is your man. He is funny, laid-back, musically talented, sociable, reliable and caring. He has friends in every village and is know as the music man.
Your safety is his concern. We didn't feel threatened or endangered at any point during out trip. I know that the international media has not spun a favorable view on Nepal in recent months, but this should not hinder your opinion on the country. It is very safe and secure, as long as you are not naive. I suggest using a guide, as there are many independent trekkers who get lost and can't be found.
Jagat has over 15 years experience in the trekking industry and is very credible. Please check out his website. www.independent-trekkingguide-nepal.com and email:jagatlama@independent-trekkingguide-nepal.com
I forgot to mention that his price is much cheaper than the corporate agencies in Thamel (Kathmandu).
Good luck trekking! :)
