View Full Version : long treks and women hygiene

Hi all,
Some treks are very long, and women have a certain *problem* roughly once a month that requires, among other things, an increased level of hygiene (i.e. flowing, warm water).
How are women managing to get through long treks in light of this ? What are the hygienic options available in the lodges up there in the hights ?

It is no different than going backpacking in North America, bring the products from home. Maybe some wet ones as well. I usually care about 50 and a roll of TP per week trekking.

Definitely bring products from home. You might consider an alternative to disposable tampons and pads by looking into the Keeper (http://thekeeper.com/), Diva Cup (http://www.divacup.com/), or Sea Pearls (http://www.seapearls.co.uk/) . If you choose one of these alternatives, make sure you give yourself several cycles to practice with it before leaving. They are not for everyone.
Used sanitary products should NEVER be deposited in Asian-style floor toilets. If you have to carry them with you until you can find a suitable place to dispose of them, carry some baking soda in two large ziplock baggies, one inside the other, for used products until you can dispose of them properly. Bringing some waterless hand sanitizer, like Purell (http://www.purell.com/) is a good idea, too.

Lars,
It's not me who's commenting on women's secret and not so secret business... And I have not authorised anyone to speak in my name, because often I have no idea what I mean when I speak, nevermind an "interpreter"!!
Since I am (still) of the male persuation, I am very carefull when opening my mouth regarding the offices and affairs of women, and most of the time I keep my mouth shut. You would be wise to do the same, as you can't win - once you get involved.

What about women taking shower, especially during the sensitive period, with the allegedly contaminated water of Nepal ? (I heard that it's recommended not to brush teeth with it...)

That is totally ridiculous! The water in the Himalayan rivers could just
very rarely be classified as "contaminated". The local Nepalis drink it as
it is, and so do I sometimes. It is recommended that western tourists
do purify it before drinking, but it is certainly good enough to shower or
swim in to anyone who would swim from a public beach in the western
part of the world.
The woman "during the sensitive period" is more likely to pollute the
water herself by bathing in it.

I agree with Lars here.
I could not stop laughing at the "no shower during sensitive period" comment... What bloomen sheltered place did you live in? I suppose you live in the city all your life and play computer games all day and night.
Definitely have a shower at least once a week while in Nepal. Wheter you think you need to or not... Else you'll smell like a yak, and even the desperate luscious yeti woman will avoid you.
