TIMS software from today

KATHMANDU:Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal (TAAN) is going to introduce Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) software from tomorrow.

The software will ensure security of tourists, while they are on trekking and also check illegal trekking. "The software will make sure that tourists at different trekking routes are safe," said president of TAAN Mahendra Singh Thapa. "We are going to launch its demonstration on February 1."

A trekker has to fill up a form with all the personal details and programmes throughout the stay which will be recorded in the TIMS software. "If in case any trekker goes missing, the software can easily trace the whereabouts," he said.

Along with the launch of the software, trekkers from abroad can also book the TIMS card in advance by filling up a form available on the TIMS website. The association, along with the government, is also planning to increase the number of check points in the trekking areas for the safety of the trekkers.

Similarly, as a trekker enters a protected area, one will be asked dates of trip, itinerary and contact number. The data will be inserted in the visitors' database, which can be accessed for park management purposes or incase of accidents and or natural calamities in order to inform the concerned institutions about the trekkers inside the park.

The cards should be collected by all, free individual trekkers and trekkers taking government authorised trekking agencies' service.

Earlier, due to lack of proper record system, rescue and search missions for trekkers used to be difficult in spotting missing trekkers. Based on data collected through TIMS software, it will be possible to know the position of trekkers for rescue operations now onwards, Thapa added.

Meanwhile, the association is also planning to revise TIMS card charges for the trekkers to Rs 200 per person - for SAARC countries - whereas for the visitors outside SAARC countries, it will be equivalent to Rs 700 per trekker from agencies and Rs 1,500 for individual trekker.

The number of trekkers has increased by nine per cent in 2011, according to TAAN.
