Are single rooms easy or difficult to find in lodges in April and May? I am a slow hiker, typically the last person in at the end of the day so I don't usually get much choice in sleeping arrangements.
Also, is there a checkout time or will lodges let you stay until 9:00 AM or so?

Easy since it is a bit after the peak season. The longer you stay the more
you eat and drink, and the happier the lodge owner. At least up until
2 PM or so when the first newcomers start dropping in.
In general there are very few problems with rules. If you behave decently
you can have dinner at 9:30 in the morning, starting with an Apfel
Strudel and a cup of coffea, continuing with a Chow Mein and top it off
with a Tomatoe Soup and mashes potatoes.
The good customer is always right.

Lars is right. There are usually plenty of rooms in April and May. And yes, no one should kick you out of your room, even by 10 am.
However, I might suggest that you try, as a rule, to walk early and arrive at your lodge early.
This is for a couple of reasons:
a) In April and May the best views of the mountains are upto around 10 or 11 am. The air gets hazy after about 10 am at this time of the year, and the views are not great. You can still see the mountains, just that your photos would not be first class.
b) secondly, you want to arrive at the lodge early enough, before the sun gets too low behind the mountains and it's get cold, especially at higher altitudes.
A 7:30 or 8 am departure time is the ideal. This gives you the natural Nepali break at 10 am, the usual western lunch at around 12:30, and then, hopefuly by 2 or 3 pm you end up at the lodge, having a bit of a rest before dinner.
