Including for their Nepal Trekking guidebook. Anyone interested?
So you want to be a Lonely Planet guidebook author?

We're always keen to hear from people who can meet our high standards, but currently we're looking for freelance authors (ie independent contract writers) with specific regional knowledge and experience (see below). It's vital that you can also meet all the essential requirements listed to be considered.

Essential requirements:

* Professional writing experience
* Specialised knowledge of a city, country or region
* Ability to write with colour, flair, authority and attitude
* Excellent research and organisational skills
* On-the-road experience of Lonely Planet guides
* Own 'tools of trade' eg computer hardware and software
* Ability to work independently


And it's a bonus if you also have:

* Travel writing experience
* Written or spoken foreign language skills (for some destinations this is essential)
* Expertise in areas such as art, music, wildlife, other cultures, food, languages, outdoor activities and other travel-related pursuits

All authors who work on our books are freelancers, hired on a contract-by-contract basis. We do not employ staff writers.

This sounds like you can get paid to trek. That is very appealing to me.

It probably means they don't have to insure you or pay you or rescue you if you fall off the trail or get abducted by the maoists.
