More than five hundred passengers lost their baggage when two conveyer belts at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) failed to work simultaneously, reports Karobar National Economic Daily.
Dinesh Shrestha, Managing Director, TIA and Daman Rawal, president, Nepal National Employees’ Union belonging to Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) confirmed that over 500 passengers lost their baggage when the two machines went out of operation after 5:00 PM on Monday.
Three foreign tourists also fainted due to the rout that ensued when the passengers hurried to find their lost belongings.
According to Rawal, the people could not secure their luggage as the passenger traffic intensified after the damage of the conveyer belts.
After the loss of their valuable personal belongings, hundreds of foreign tourists were left in a lurch. They were seen in a helpless situation in the exit of the terminal building.
The TIA has the capacity to handle some 300 passengers per hour. However, the number of flights increased and there was a queue of more than one thousand passengers at the baggage clearance section of the airport.
The hullabaloo also triggered amongst the passengers when only one conveyer belt was in operation to transfer the luggage.
According to the TIA management, the conveyer belts frequently face technical disruption as they are more than 20 years old. It is estimated that some Rs 600 million is required to replace the old ones.
However, some employees at the TIA suspect that the belt was disrupted deliberately with an unscrupulous motive.
“Domestic companies are showing willingness to repair the belt in just 7 to 8 lakhs. But, the management has set aside Rs 30 million for the maintenance. And, it smacks off sneaky motive,” the daily quoted a source as saying.
The country’s only international airport has often been criticised for the pitiable level of its service, facility and security standards.
