Hi all

I am trekking to everest base camp from lukla soon. I am trying to convince my girlfriend to come along but she is very worried about accomidations. She is used to staying in very expensive Hotels +500 us per nite usally. I however don't care were I sleep. I might be able to convince her to rough it for part of the trip, but my question is if someone wanted to spend more to get a place with a private room and private bath is this possible for part of the trip or simply not avaliable. Any comments would be appreciated.

You'll get your own room in all the way to Gokyo or EBC. As far as private bathroom is concerned, I know this is available in Lukla, Namche... I have not tried in other places but who know. Hotel Namche, in the omonyme town, is probably the best in the area...
and of course there is the five star Everest View hotel at about 200 US dollars a night on a nice ridge above Namche.

Try this one in Namche - just a few months old. Up near Gompa and left side of town. Has rooms with attached bath and toilet - excellent quality all round.

There are many 'better' lodges. Eg. Depending on your plans, I avoid staying in Tengboche, prefering Ama Dablam Garden lodge at Dedoche (30 minutes down hill).

Hi there,

I was a bit like your girlfriend before I went to Nepal. In fact, everyone was worried I would be crying to come home within the first few days. I had never even been in a tent before and was to spend 2 months at EBC in a tent! In the end I coped with the conditions a lot better than the lads and I even surprised myself. The lodges are not bad at all, even the most basic ones. They are very well kept in general. The toilet facilities might bother your girlfriend but I got round this by wearing my sunglasses and a bandana over my face in the out houses. Just make sure she doesn't drop her sunglasses in there like one of my friends did!
After my experience over there I no longer care where I sleep or what kind of conditions there are and I no longer need fluffy white towels and clean sheets everywhere I go....a tent is just fine! Your girlfriend might learn a lot about herself.
Sometimes at EBC visiting trekkers would ask me politely where the 'ladies toilets' are. I always found that funny and I'd politely tell them that the nearest 'ladies' are just a few day's tekking away :-)
Tell your girlfriend not to worry. Most of the charm of Nepal is that it doesn't have the sterile, modern, glitzy feel that we are used to in the western world. It's a unique place and that's what makes it so special. Personally I hope they can always hold on to that simple, natural and friendly atmosphere there is today.
Bring plenty of babywipes...they're a real luxury over there :-)

Happycamper you are right. Part of the whole Nepal experience is that it forces an evaluation of values and changes, hopefully, our perspective. Or at least gets us to ask some questions and challenge some assumptions about what the hell is important and what is less so... Existential hogwash to some, important to others.

Well there is hoppe! As the german Trekking operator DAV Summit Club has found out that many people think like your girlfriend, they build with a nepali trekking company a serie of "good " hotels for the trek to Tengboche. They all have attached bathroom with running hot water. A night with dinner will be around 100 USD and I met several people who liked it very much.
You can find these lodges in Monjo (just 300 m before the national park entrance, one on the way to Thame pretty high on the hill near a gompa and in Trashinda about 4 hours before Tengboche.
I think that there will be also some good and comfortables Hotels in Namche.
So you could offer her a perfekt 6-7 day's trekkingtour to Tengboche with " acceptables" hotels.
