I am planning a solo trip to Nepal in October and hope to visit good ol' EBC. I don't want to go with a guided group though, so I am seeking tips and recommendations from "must sees" to "good advice" to training ideas. Please send your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi !
I've just returned (about 2 weeks ago) from the EBC trek. Just a few quick things I'd recommend. Definitely hire a guide, especially if you've never been there before. It will enhance the experience. A good guide will know the best lodges, will be able to answer any questions you have, will basically help you make the right decisions about routes / acclimatisation etc. I've recommended the guide I used earlier on this subject thread but there are plenty to choose from.
Also, on the trail, don't go straight to Lobuche from Pheriche (assuming you stay at Pheriche). The altitude gain is just to much at once. I'd recommend going from Pangboche to Dingboche and having a couple of nights at Dingboche.
Make sure you're carrying a head torch. Mine proved invaluable. I started out at the end of Feb. It was still pretty cold but I managed to stay warm with a fleece and gortex outer jacket, plus gloves and hat etc.
Depending on when you go it will probably be warmer. You don't need a down jacket in addition to the above. If you're not planning to hire a porter, travel as light as you can.
That's all for now ! Good luck !

October is a very good time for Everst Basecamp trekking in Nepal. As you do not want to go with organized trek group. I would like to help you with all the informations you want - you can contact me at bigfoottreks@yahoo.com. Would be pleased to help you with your travel to Nepal and for other informations regarding the Everst Basecamp trekking. As a solo traveller you have got plenty of time on your own. So you can schedule a time or an itinerary for yourself for during your trek. I cannot show you the sample itinery here but once you write to me I can guide you how about to plan your trip to Everest and back. The cost breakdown (budget you can allocate for your trek). It would be my pleasure to help you and provide assistance for you for your visit to Nepal. Please feel to contact as/when necessary. I have helped one of my friends (her) who infact is doing the EBC trek starting this 22nd April as a backpacker.
Best wishes.

Hi, recently got back from doing the Annapurna trek in March with my wife, was absolutely amazing, but! don't go solo at the moment, definately use an independent guide and a guide who is used to treking with western women(it's a Nepal male attitude thing)it will be worth its weight in gold, not only for good advice, good company, good health, safety, and an insight into the soul of Nepal.
Training wise: Altitude is a bitch, get high slowly, take your time and be flexible with your duration in the mountains. Cycling, walking to get fit, mostly up hill! and get used to using walking poles for down hill!
You can't get truely mountain fit unless your in them, so just a good level of fitness for stamina, altitude will soon halve that.
The guide we used was fantastic, great spoken english, great attitude, and very generous, i would recommend him to all women trekkers for Nepal and Tibet, very knowledgable guy.
If you're interested or just want information from on the ground in Nepal you can contact him by email with all your Q's and be sure of a thoughtful response(l_jagat@hotmail.com), he also has a website with loads of info which is useful:

during our trip i made a short film which might interest you if you have a fast connection:

Lenny makes a fair point about women and guides. There may be issues for women alone.
Bear in mind gefore going to the Khumbu you dont get the sense of the trail. It is not a wilderness experience. If you have been to nepal before eg Annapurna etc than you realize that you are never really alone. You can always hook up with people on the trail . Choose the people you like and walk with them. You will meet more on the way and in lodges. The walking routes are failrly predictable . ie Lukla--Namche--Gokyo or Lukla --Namche--Tengboche --Lobuche etc EBC
Make sure you have good general fitness as it makes it all more enjoyable. Boots have to well walked in. Not ifs or buts about that . Make sure you walk in them in hill conditions.
There are many issues about aclimatisation. A good guide book like Lonely PLanet is good. I used Jamie McGuiness Trekking in the Everest region. It gives a good list of possible tours between 10 to 21 days,

Hi there, I too am planning to travel independently to EBC in October. Its interesting what people have said about getting a guide that is okay with Western women. Have you found a guide? Who have you gone with? I'm still trawling through all the websites.
