Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the 'Trekking TMS' is and how and when it is paid.
I am told it is US$20 per trekker and the National Park fee to EBC is 1000 Rs.
The last time I was in Nepal I didnt need a trekking permit but did have to pay the park fee on entry so I am wondering what is 'TMS'...???
Thanks for any answers.
Ricky.

I think you mean TIMS - Trekker's Information Management System. It's a recently introduced method of extracting more money from trekkers. It's supposed to help if you get into problems on your trek as the authorities can find out where you are supposed to be and it has information on your insurance, etc., They also say it's to stop illegal trekking activities (by Nepalis) but they always say that. I think that is TAAN trying to stop everyone bar their members from working in the trekking industry. Anyhow, you need it and it will cost $20 if you trek independently and $10 if you trek in an organised group, i.e. through an agency. You still need the National park permit. Checkpoints on the trail will check that you have both!

You can either queue up at the TAAN office or get one from a TAAN registered Agent – They tend to charge a flat fee of $20 per TIM’s Card (Regardless of if you are trekking with staff or alone) So it can work out as exactly the same price as wasting ½ a day queuing up at the TAAN office.
If you are on a tight schedule it is also possible to arrange TIMS in advance through a TAAN registered Agent – You would have to send them a scanned in passport information page and agree a small commission.
Good Luck

Thanks for the info Rob.
I dont suppose you can recommend a TAAN registered agent can you.
We will have 1 spare day in Kathmandu to get everything sorted before we fly to Phaplu to start our trek ..
Thanks,
Ricky..
