Free-visa regime from 2011 to attract tourists
If a proposal forwarded by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) is endorsed by Nepal government, foreigners coming to the country will not need to pay visa fee.
According to a report, in a bid to attract more foreign tourists to the country and make Nepal Tourism Year 2011 campaign a grand success, MoTCA has proposed the government to waive visa fee at least for the campaign period.
Nepal has set a target to welcoming more than 1mn foreign tourists in 2011. More than half a million foreigners had visited the country in 2009.
Laxman Bhattarai, spokesperson and joint secretary at MoTCA, said the proposal had been forwarded to the ministry of finance to incorporate it in the budget for fiscal year 2010/11.
He informed the daily that the proposal to introduce free-visa regime was worked out by the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 national co-ordination committee.
At present, foreign visitors need to pay $25 for visa for 15 days and $40 for a month.

Any more news on this?

I am not sure this is going to work. Is this the main issue with visitors not choosing Nepal as a tourist destination over other countries? I doubt it. If visa fee is a contributing factor for the number of visitors to Nepal, it would only be a minor one. The "no visa fee" policy might have an initial small impact, but then no one will care. And maybe that is all that is desired or expected by whoever contributed to this decision. If it will come to pass...

Plus... I do not mind paying the 40 dollars. What annoys the hell out of me is the waiting in line, completing paperwork, handing over photos, passport, papers etc. All the rigmarolle of bureaucracy. If they would just collect the money without all of this crap, I would be quite ok with the whole thing.
