Does anyone know of a UK based insurance company that will cover 5000+m? I'm trekking the Annapurna Circuit in a couple of weeks.

One way of handling the altitude limit is to purchase a special evacuation insurance only for the days when you might be above the limits of the normal travel insurance. I have used this a couple of times and this was taken care by the insurance agent. The special cover was provided by a Danish company, the name of which I forget. This might be cheaper than a full high-altitude coverage for the whole trek.

Hi When we did the Annapurna in 2006 ,we looked all over for specialist Insurance cover we tried BMC (British Mountain Council ) no chance TOO RISKY for them !! Then Snow something specialist (they werent interested )
Then by chance we consulted our bank Natwest with who we have ordinary travel insurance cover ,they said we would be covered up to about 200 ft from the top of the Thorung La ,I figured that if one of us died on top we could drag the body down 200 ft (Ha Ha !!) so that was good enough for us .So make sure you check with your bank .We did the same for EBC in 2008
Cheers Mike

Per, I understand where you are coming from, but at the same time talking from my experience, we only had cover up to 3000m and luckily we got away with that, but only just. I slipped and fell while we were above 3000m, I got away with just cuts and bruises but it really was a close call.
So unless you have a good credit card you can put the cost of helicopter flights and medical bills don't risk it, you just don't know what will happen. I never expected to be slipping 30ft down a mountain, but I did. :(

You can get cover from International Health Insurance (http://global.ihi.com/travel+insurance.aspx) (IHI)
They are a Dannish company but will provide cover for anyone. I've used them in the past (bought a policy, never had to claim).

Previously I have had my insurance from the likes of The BMC and Snowcard (both underwritten by Fortis). For my upcoming trek I am going to be covered by my bank's policy - but I have taken the precaution of upgrading my account to the "premium" level and stipulated the degree of holiday insurance expected is a precondition. This premium account has the added bonus of giving me access to the executive lounge facilities at the airports for my flights to/from Nepal
