Thamel is one big party for New Year. I was there for the turn of 2009, the party-poopers in authority tried to say all celebrations should stop by 10pm(!!), but that was ignored and much fun was had by all until well past midnight.
I was in Namche for christmas, we ate dahl bhat and drank rum.

Christmas in KTM is funny -- Thamel puts on a show for the tourists with decorations, santas etc. Odd in the midst of a Hindu/Buddhist country!
No problem getting a Christmas dinner with turkey (from India) and trimmings in Thamel (e.g., Northfield Cafe) -- however, we went for good Indian food at Mandaps instead (2008).
Hey Oli, Christmas 2005, we woke up in Phortse Tenga (picture ice-filled toilets  ), had a Christmas hike to Namche, and spent Christmas pm (just as you describe) at our favourite lodge (Thamserku View, with excellent cook :) ) in Namche

Christmas day '08 was delightful. We woke up in Mong to a lovely clear and sunny day, beautiful views up the valley. A leisurely stroll round to Namche (nicely downhill all the way), going via the "interesting route" through the cleft and steps down the cliff behind Sanasa. In the evening there was a dusting of snow, not so much as to make the trails difficult, just enough to say we had a white christmas. And with a mobile phone service I was able to call my family at home.
We would have had more of a feast and booze if we had been in Thamel. I was contemplating going to see what they had in the way of christmas dinner at '1905' (Kilroys place on Kantipath).
There will be no shortage of places to hang out in Thamel for the New Year, if you've been in town before then you'll likely have a favourite haunt, or pick a random party. We spent the best part of the night in Sam's Bar.
I would love to go back to Nepal for another December trek then Xmas & New Year out there. Maybe 2011-2012 I'll do it again...
