Did any of you ever use a pedometer on a trek?

I got one just a month ago and find it quite interesting.

Pedometer works by counting steps and you calculate your own stride and then get distance.

It's a fun toy, but hardly works in Nepal because the hills are so steep that your stride is much smaller (at least uphill) than normal, so the numbers are way off. Plus, the actual distance on an uphill trail is much different from the map distance.

What experience did you have? Any useful results?

Some members in our last trekking group had those. "Wow, we took 32000 steps today!" Next day: "31000 steps today!" Next: "34000 steps" All in unison: "yawn..."

really, who cares.

Still, it is more harmless than a GPS... Which puts out even more useless info and takes longer to fondle.

I have read somewhere that 5000 steps a day would suffice for normal exercise.
From some quite modest walks I have taken around the city I am surprised at
how soon the steps accumulate. I would have thought that 5000 steps was
more of a walk than it actually is.

The other day I made a 4 hour hike. That came to 26 000 steps.

Just for the hell of it I would like to know how many steps a Himalayan trek is.

The headline for my next magazine article is "One Million Steps around the Annapurnas"...

The way I counted it was actually a bit more (including Manaslu circuit attempt and NarPhu).

For the normal trekking days our step count was around 30 -34 kiloSteps/day.

Like I said, this does not iterest me at all...

About those GPS gadgets can they....

oops....
