Please, does anyone know whether it is necessary for a US citizen to have a visa if he/she is connecting through Delhi? I am not staying there, and will not leave the international terminal. Can I purchase the visa in the Delhi airport? I have been told that I will need to purchase a visa. I have also been told that there is such a thing called a transit visa. Lastly, I am on the verge of spending $180 dollars to FedEx all of my documents to Washington, DC, and get them FedEx back to me. I really hate to do this if it is not necessary. I have been told 3 different things today. Any info would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks,
SEH

Thanks for all of the responses...HA HA. Well to update you, the response I received about the need for a visa to exchange planes in Delhi were about 50/50. I decided to get one. I had to do it through an emergency service. I thought it would be a lot better than being returned home. If I find anything out when I travel, I will update the board. Though this situation may not affect many, it might save someone some money and worries at some point.
Take Care,

Of course you do not need a visa for countries that you do not enter!
It is not unusual that international flights land in several places along the
way that I did not even know about beforehand. It says nothing about in
the airline ticket. Good grief if I had to get visas for all those places!
The transit lounge in an international airport is meant for travellers that
are not officially in the country.
A transit visa is good for an actual stay in India for up to two weeks. Or
at least it was two weeks some years ago when I had to use a such.
I entered India overland from Nepal, hung out in Benares a few days
and then took the train to Delhi, and a flight to Europe from there.
