Hey Everyone:

Does anyone have any information on the the aboved mentioned hotel in Kathmandu? Is it nice? Is it culturally unique? Does it have good food? Did you have a positive experience?

Most importantly: Is it in a safe area, that is close to the shopping areas for tourist?

Man, do I sound like a tourist. I have to be honest...I do enjoy tourist traps.

Thanks,

SEH

IGH is just outside Thamel proper. Used to be very popular with the Japanese tourists, but it is definitely more "mainstream" now. Still very close to the tourist ghetto in Thamel, but not right in the middle of it.
Nothing wrong with Thamel by the way. I LOVE it! It is just amazing.

If you want to be right into it's bowels, there are (in the same league with IGH):

Hotel Utse, Hotel Norling, Tibet Guest House, Hotel Norbu Linka, Hotel Excelsior. And of course there is the venerable (and excellent or pretentious and expensive, depending on your point of view) KGH.

I have stayed at Hotel Norbu Linka a couple of times. The staff are wonderful. It is just off the main area of Thamel so nice and quiet. KGH is where everyone stays but it is BIG and IMPERSONAL. There is no way the staff can get to know you or care to. It's like the fast food of hotels. Skip Hotel Dynasty, lots of noisy Indian tourists and unaccommodating staff.

I agree Sharon, the one time I staid at KGH it gave me the feeling you so aplty express as "fast food" of guesthouses. And impersonal.

I liked Kathmandu Peace Guest house in particular. In Paknajol, just ouside Thamel, and with beautiful view of Swayambu, the mountains and Kathmandu - from it's terrace. good value for 12 dollars a night. It is also very quiet in a cul-de-sac, right next door to Tibet Peace Guest House. Did not put it up simply because seh's enquiry was about guesthouses right in the middle of the turist ghetto...

Hey:

I guess from what you have said that the hotel is OK? Can you give a little more specifics on what you know?
Thanks so much,

SEH

Sorry Seh, I did not stay at International Guest House. However it has as good a reputation as the other hotels I mentioned. It is one of the better known guest houses in Thamel (or just outside it) simply because it caters to some organised trekking groups. I don't think you can go wrong going there. I was just pointing out it is not right in the middle of Thamel, rather maybe 300 metres outside it.
