I just read this article in the Telegraph. Not sure whether I should read much into it. But I am curious about the knock on effects. Could this result in price rises from hotels, trekking equipment to hiring guides. What do you think?
Prices soar in Nepalese blockade
By Thomas Bell In Kathmandu
VITAL supply routes into Kathmandu were almost deserted yesterday on the fifth day of a blockade by Maoist rebels called in protest at King Gyanendra’s seizure of power two weeks ago. The only movement on a normally congested road into the Nepalese capital was that of children herding goats and women collecting firewood from overhanging trees. Soldiers loafed in the shade.
The blockade has brought steep price rises. At the Kathmandu vegetable market, tomatoes have risen by 60% since last week. By 1.30pm only 12 lorries had entered the city. On a normal day more than 500 deliver everything from vegetables to cooking gas and petrol to the 1.5 million inhabitants.
Not sure if anyone who is in Nepal can comment on this article or what peoples thoughts are on the subject?
Thanks for you’re time
John
