See Kathmandu CIWEC clinic info on rabies:

http://www.ciwec-clinic.com/articles/rabies_prevention_in_nepal.php

http://www.ciwec-clinic.com/articles/immunization_advice_for_nepal.php

CIWEC: "In Nepal, most animal exposures to travelers occur in Kathmandu and monkey bites/scratches account for 43% of all exposures in tourists in a study done at CIWEC Clinic. Monkey bites are sustained most commonly at the monkey temple (Swyambu) and in the Pashupati temple area. Contrary to popular belief, trekking in Nepal does not pose any added risk to the traveler."

If you are spending a considerable time in Kathmandu, it appears you should consider Rabies immunization. Just a week plus trekking and it is not usually recommended. However: this recommendation seems to be changing from previously not recommending the vaccine for trekkers to no longer clearly stating this and now leaving it up to the trekker.

Whatever: avoid dogs and especially those damn monkeys!

Pre-exposure vaccine costs are high (C$650 here in Canada!)....

I don't bother with rabies vaccination, but that's my choice having read the advice and weighed up the odds. If you do get bit by a rabid animal then you need the post exposure treatment even if you've had the vaccine beforehand. The dogs in Nepal are altogether more placid than those in South America, but the monkeys at Swayambunath are a real risk.

I have not bothered with Rabbies vactinations. Dogs don's seem to be vicious on trek. I also believe that my trekking poles are threatening enough so they don't even come close. Must sense it that I am quite willing to use them with vicious violence. A lot more violence that the poor mongrels can muster. I am talking shock and awe... Would have relished the chance but they seem to keep their distance, and never even bare their teeth, not even at a distannce.

Poor little doggies, they do well to avoid such a savage brute. :p

Dogs in Nepal are not as well treated as those in the west. They are often considered to be the reincarnation of naughty priests. In my experience they are as much wary of humans as travellers should be of them. There are a few Nepali in Kathmandu who have taken to keeping dogs as pets, but most of them in the city are strays that live on the charity of the home & shop holders in their local 'patch'.

Don't try eating that mango at Pashupatinath lest it be snatched in a lightning raid by a bunch of simian desparados.

7 treks and I have never giotten the rabies vaccination. Steer clear of the monkeys in Kathmandu. You hear warnings about dogs on treks but I have never had a problem.

Glad you didn't take me seriously ;)
Interesting stuff about the dogs in Nepal. Thanks.

I agree with rich, probably the moneky at Swayambu are more dangerous if you encourage them.

I came across a dog being stoned and chased out of Duklikhel. It had rabies. It was frothing at the mouth.

Yes, I think so too!

Especially teddys, which I have lots of, I just can't resist a cute and cuddly toy. If I see one in a shop that looks lonely or sad, I always have to buy it and take him home.

I was on the look out for a Yak soft toy in Nepal, but they don't exist, wooden ones do, but not soft cuddly fluffy ones, shame really, they could make a bob or two if they were for sale Im sure. Nice pressie to bring back for the kids or gran kids, or just for me!
