Please forgive a naive question from a first-time traveller, but has anyone ever had any difficulty getting pocket knives or multi-tools through customs in Nepal, Thailand or Australia? Someone told me they had their dive knife confiscated at an Aussie airport on their way home from a dive trip - any truth to this? I'd hate to go without my leatherman - its a potential life saver!

I only carry a multi-purpose pocket knife, obviously in check thru luggage. This includes internal flights in Nepal too - they are on the look out for this and ski poles etc. Never heard of any issues at Aussie end either.

I found that customs will remove anything from you’re hand luggage they see that could be a threat on board. Such as tweezers, pocketknives, scissors, even though tiny Swiss army knifes that you can put on you’re key ring. Although its a pain if you’re favourite knife that you’ve had for years gets confiscated, I think it’s a good thing that customs are cracking down on sharp objects. Better to be safe than sorry.

Having said all this they do miss things. But if you’re unsure whether to take it put it in you’re check in luggage like Boulia said. Before you check in there are usually a posters showing things to leave out or are describe as a danger to the flight. Most people are highly unlike likely to need a pocketknife while flying. So leave it in you’re luggage so you can use it when needed or even to save you’re life!

Thanks john

Sorry, I was actually referring to checked luggage only

Ok, cheers. One other thing (didn't want to post this as a new thread as its probably another dumb questions) but I've been told that the weight limit for domestic flights to Lukla is 10kg. Does this include carry-on baggage like my daypack?

It could be but I have never had any trouble with more than that. I've had a porter pack in the luggage and a fairly large pack on board though not heavy as no water etc loaded at that time. Its awkward though so i always try to drop the onboard pack off at the back of the seats as I enter as there is not much leg room. Never had a weigh in or size check as in other countries !

I'm Brisbane based too so if you like just send a contact email or maybe the private message though this site.

Thanks again Boulia. My email is snaark@it.net.au

When are you headed over? I fly out on March 14, spend a couple of days in BK, then KTM to Lukla on the 19th for a 3wk EBC trek. Might see you out there!
