Over the last few fews I came across a post somewhere that this trek can be done a teahouse trek. I started to look into it but can not find much information, it seems that we would still have to have a guide and special permit.
I am still at the stage of gathering more information
Any direction, suggestions, information is really appreciated.

We 7 are going begining of April, also Nar-Phu. Of course it would be possible to do it the "hard" way, local travellers get food and accomodation somewhere after all, but in any case you need tents for a few nights for the Larkya La. And you have to take a guide at least, might be tough to make him carry his share. We are doing the easy way; 30 day safari style affair including Manaslu around, Nar-Phu, Tilicho to Jomsom is about 1400€/pax. Not bad...

Manaslu is a fabulous trek. In November 2003 there was simply a yak kharka at the base camp so to speak. Every where else were rough tea houses. More for nepalis and tibetans bringing goods back and forth. I have heard more tea house are being built but wit an expedition style is better. You will have to have the permit and guide.
Take your time and enjoy.

Sharon, if you were to compare the mountain scenery of Khumbu (we did Jiri to Namche and then 3 passes) to Manaslu, which one is more scenic, do you have any pictures of Manaslu? It seems you have trekked in Nepal quite a lot, which trek would be the one you would like to do again and why, which is your favorite?

Sorry Sharon for my jumping in here...

You bias the answer by asking to compare mountain scenery to that in the Khumbu. Mountain scenery is great around Manaslu (at least it was in 1993 -- doubt if THAT aspect of the trek has changed!) -- Manaslu itself is a beautiful mountain, as are the mountains visible from Larkya La --

I'd say overall the "mountain" scenery is better in upper Khumbu. But is that the point? The Manaslu trip is fantastic in that it is so isolated, and the villages -- especially the Tibetan villages of Sama and Samdo but also others -- remarkable.

Then again, these days I am less of a mountain scenery person and more of a village person (although there are limits, as I've recently discovered).

Hi Petrus,

Would you care to share your itinenary with me please? I received a quote yesterday for a 24 days round manaslu trip, camping style w/o nar-phu, tilicho and jomson. The cost was a little higher than yours. You can pm me or reply in this forum. Thank you!:)
