View Full Version : Best site to sort out the mountains?

Is there a good website, preferably map based, where one can see
images of Himalayan mountains from different angles?

I do hope that by now I have the big ones sorted out but there are so
many other beautiful mountains that I have on picture here and there,
and I am unsure of which ones they actually are.

This a picture I took from Pheriche, facing north.

Here is another one from Pheriche, facing south.

I had this one as a background on a computer at work. People kept
asking me; "is that Everest?" I could tell them it wasn't Big E, but was
not sure what mountain it actually is.

I am only guessing but I should think the mountain you see facing North from Pheriche is likely to be Lobuche East (a popular trekking peak) as seen on the right hand side of this photo

http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Nepal/photo12724.htm

and the south facing view probably was looking at the mighty north face of Tawache (taboche)
http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Nepal/photo62274.htm

seen here from the SW ridge of Ama Dablam. I don't have a picture online of the view you are talking about but is it the one that towers above you when you are amongst the memorial cairns on the way to Pheriche for all those who have sadly lost the lives climbing in the Khumbu?

When crossing the Cho La from the Gokyo side to the Lobuche side you pass directly beneath this face and it is truly a spectacular and awesome sight.

I agree with you on the Lobuche East, but not on Taboche.

The big one towards south is more likely Kangtega. It may even be
Tamserku since she looks quite different from different angles.

I recall the view of Taboche from the trek over Cho La. Like here;

Btw, a terrific picture you have there, labeled "The valley beyond
Pheriche".

I used to think that there were no views from Pheriche, that it was just
a dull place where you could stay safely in case of snow. I was wrong!

I haven't got a picture online of the view you talk about but here is one of mine of Kangtega and Thamserku from Gokyo:- http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Nepal/photo55293.htm

I found this picture taken from Lobuche (not one of mine) that might be similar to the view you are talking about http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Nepal/photo131038.htm
Kangtega is just right of centre and Thamserku is to the right of Kangtega.

If you are interested then I have some of my photos here http://www.trekearth.com/members/escher1/photos/

Mountain spotting is my favourite sport!

Cheers
Richard

Ps. It was a beautiful, calm and warm February day the first time I was in Pheriche when that picture was taken. I really thought it was a lovely spot, the intense colours of the heathers and plants on the ground, soft clouds scudding by and the anticipation of going to Lobuche and onto BC was thrilling. Subsequent visits there though showed Pheriche to be cold, windswept and desolate. I guess I was just lucky that first time I was up there!

Pps. None of your links seem to be appearing. Do you have a website I can look at where your photos are published?

Well, is not quite what you ask, but at this link, I did find nice satelite photos from some areas of the most famous treks in Nepal. Some have notations identifying the places:

Wow what a site! I got lost for several hours in there, clicking myself
all over the world.

I have never gotten around to hanging out any of my trekking pictures
on the web. But I did set up an account at Trekearth.com so maybe soon.

You have some very nice pictures there, and so do many others. I have
been back several times to look at this beautiful face Nepali girl at morning prayer (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Nepal/photo92997.htm)

If you go to Options (http://trekinfo.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) and choose "Thread Display Options"
you can mark that you want to view attached images in posts. You may
have to create a profile first though.

PS After having checked again on my map I must change my idea of
the mountain I said was Taboche. It is most certainly Cholatse.
We are walking from Lobuche towards Dzongla, heading in a NW-ly
direction. The lake is Chola Tsho.
