Hello strangers,

Real quick question, and I would be extremely grateful for some solid advice.

Here's the deal. I came to thailand to visit my sister here. I was planning on purely warm weather trips. I will be here for another month. The Nepal idea came to us out of thin air, now we are sold on it. However, we are a bit unprepared.

Now, I would be travelling with two girls who have bad knees, so serious trekking is out of the question (this time, hehehe), besides, we do not have any cold weather hiking gear.

I guess I will cut to the chase, excuse if this seems impossibly general, but:

Would you recommend a 10-day trip, in early january, with scant hiking gear, and about 500 - 600 dollars to spend?

Obviously, we just want to get a good flavor for the country, get around to some different places, have a good time, and get some ideas for a possible trip in the future.

Thanks, Derek Repp

Hi Derek,

I'd suggest going to Pokhara. The Annapurna Sanctuary would be a great trek (use walking sticks), or just a bit of hiking in the foothills if the girls' knees are not up for it.

You can get decent fleeces very cheaply in Kathmandu & Pokhara, and if you are going up to the Sanctuary then you can rent a down jacket & sleeping bag - apparently it is rather cold in Nepal at the moment.

Enjoy your trip ;)
