Hi,
I intend to take a trekking holiday in january and am considering Nepal as a destination. I was wondering what trek would be ideal at this time of the year (ie january). Would the temperature be a major problem.
I cannot say that I am a experienced trekker, but have done some tiring treks in the past. So something challenging with some nice views would be great.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sibisoro.

I am also travelling in January. My concern is also with the recent Maoist insurgency. Has anyone been there, and would they have any tips regarding this ?

January is cold. As you climb above 3000m it will be maybe 10 degrees during the day, and perhaps 0 or even -5, -10 degrees at night. If you go upto, say, Gokyo or ABC, you may even have -20 degrees at night. On the positive side (some may even regard the cold as positive...) you will generally have the best views possible, with the cold crips air, and lack of humidity, making visility excellent. So you'll have good pics. Make sure you have good boots, clothing, Polypropylene underwear, gore-tex or similar wind cover, downe jacket (a must at this time of the year), good sunglasses, head cover (beanie), mittens, and a warme downe sleeping bag.
Regarding the enquiry about the maoists... Not much has changed over the last couple of years. I have trekked in April on my last visit there. Friends of mine are in Nepal right now enjoying themselves. There have been no major issues, and certainly no tourists has been harmed. When you are in Nepal and trekking in the mountains, you will ask yourself what the big fuss was all about.
