Here is an extract from a mail I received from a Nepalese friend of mine. Some of you might find it interesting:
"The situation of the country is same as last year. It seems nothing going to be better soon. Now I am pretty much worried about the situation. It is very frightful! Though, both the security forces and rebels deny violation of human rights people in the rural area have been badly affected by their activities. Thousands of people have been depleted by the Maoists' atrocity and compelled to shelter somewhere in safer places as an internal refugee. They exert money from the locals; abduct even minors and enlist them in their solders. Security forces carry out their operations wildly. Schools have been used as either Maoists' training center or shelter for the security forces and students are compelled to leave their schools everyday. Some of the remote trekking routes being charged as a double visa systems, one by the government before entering Nepal and another by the rebels. These systems are the most negative impact on the tourism sector. Any one can’t say, how long will take this conflict.
From today we have a much-hyped second world Buddhist jamboree is starting from today at the birthplace of Buddha - Lumbini. The over 2500 years old shrine has been selected as the venue for the international gathering of heads of states, political leaders, diplomats and religious leaders.
Three working papers – Indispensability of peace in the present world context, Lumbini’s development and international cooperation and developing Lumbini as a world peace city – will be presented during the three-days event.
Hopefully, this summit may bring a precautionary cognizance among the egoist Nepal’s political leaders and help to bring peace soon in the Kingdom!!!"
